The Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made a commitment to local footballers in the Ghana Premier League, assuring them of an average monthly salary of GH₵1,500 with the backing of the next National Democratic Congress government. This announcement comes in response to the longstanding appeal from local footballers for the implementation of a minimum wage law to ensure fair compensation and prevent a mass exodus of players seeking opportunities abroad.
Addressing the concerns raised by footballers regarding their financial well-being, the NDC’s manifesto outlines a comprehensive strategy for sports development in the country. One notable feature of this strategy is the establishment of a dedicated sports fund. This fund is designed to provide financial support to various aspects of sports, with a particular emphasis on aiding football clubs in meeting the proposed minimum monthly salary of GH₵1,500 for players.

“THE NDC WILL ESTABLISH A SPORTS DEVELOPMENT FUND. THE GOVERNMENT WILL FURNISH THE ACCOUNT WITH ENOUGH MONEY AND ALSO GENERATE SOME FROM COOPERATE BODIES”, HE TOLD KUMASI FM.
“EVERY CLUB THAT PLAYS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE WILL BE SUPPORTED WITH FUNDS TO SETTLE PLAYER SALARIES, AN AVERAGE MONEY OF GHC 1,500 WILL BE PAID TO EACH PLAYER.
“EVERY CLUB THAT QUALIFIES TO PLAY IN THE CAF INTER-CLUB COMPETITION WILL ALSO BE SUPPORTED. THE INTER-COLLEGES GAMES WILL ALSO BE SUPPORTED FINANCIALLY WITH THIS FUND.
“HOWEVER, CLUBS THAT TRANSFER PLAYERS ABROAD WILL GIVE A PERCENTAGE OF THE MONEY THEY EARN INTO THE SPORTS FUND.”
